DIY Healthy Home Cleaning Products

healthy home cleaning recipes

As promised, this week I'm going to share with you some of my favorite DIY home-cleaning recipes. These are simple, quick to make, smell great, and therefor make cleaning so much more enjoyable! Yeah, I said it, cleaning can be enjoyable!

Quick backstory: I started trading out some of our home cleaning products in 2010 when I realized I just felt gross when I sprayed my counters and scrubbed them down. I was working full-time as a dental hygienist then and had plenty of exposure to toxic chemicals during the workday so I wanted to give my body and respiratory system a break when I went home. I noticed I would get a mild headache when I cleaned the kitchen and that's when I suspected my cleaning solutions. I hadn't thought of it before since I was using the "green" option my grocery store carried. Don't forget you can get the stats on your home care products over at the EWG website! I then turned to Pinterest (of course!) for some help with finding the perfect DIY counter cleaner. After a few different recipes I finally found some I love! Thank you Nick at Macheesmo!

All-purpose Cleaner

  • 3 Tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon washing soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon castile soap
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 10 drops Essential Oil of choice (I like lavender and sometimes lemon!)

Directions: mix all ingredients in a clean spray bottle (watch out for the bubbling reaction!). Spray counters and clean as usual!

*There are differing opinions on mixing vinegar with castile soap since scientifically, it would seem to cut its effectiveness, but despite this I've really enjoyed this cleaner and found it to work well!

Bath, sink and tile cleaner

For tougher jobs I prefer something with a little more grit that can still cut through grease without wearing out my joints from scrubbing so hard-this recipe fits the bill!

  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup castile soap
  • 2 Tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 5 drops Tea Tree Essential oil

Directions: Make this recipe in a squirt bottle as opposed to a spray bottle. I re-purposed an old shampoo bottle but you could always pick up a travel shampoo container at the store. Mix all ingredients in the squirt bottle and watch out for bubbling-this recipe is a vigorous bubbler! Use on your tub, sink, stove top or anywhere that needs a little extra grit to get clean. My solution dries out a little in the container over time so I just add a little splash of water before cleaning, give it a shake and go!

Making your own cleaning solutions is a great way to have a cleaner, healthier home and to cut down on costs!

Essential oils are a great addition to home cleaning products since they smell great, have antibacterial properties, etc. and are not fragrance (fragrances are composed of endocrine-disrupting phthalates and should be avoided). Do your research before purchasing essential oils, not all are created equal and many are not pure therapeutic grade essential oils.

Wishing you and yours a healthier, happier home, one conscious decision at a time!
